Charlemagne, (742-814): King of the Franks (Germanic tribe of the Rhine region in the early Christian era) who was crowned as the first "Holy Roman Emperor" on Christmas Day 800 Ad. His conquests greatly extended the Frankish kingdom and stemmed the spread of Islam. Through enlightened reforms, revived learning in Western Europe. His confidant was the monk Alcuin. He built Aachen Cathedral. | |||||
