Seeking spiritual roots The Christian Travelers Guide Website is dedicated to awakening a sense of wonder among Christians as they survey their rich historical, cultural, and social heritage. Repeatedly, both the Old and New Testaments point to examples of faith which we as Christians are encouraged to follow (Joshua 4; Luke 11:29 – 32; Acts 7; Hebrews 12). Remembering the deeds of God's people strengthens our own faith. This fact was long recognized by the leaders of the church. Throughout history, Christians have told and retold stories of courage and faith. Yet today these stories are all but forgotten. Lives of the saints, which were once standard texts for every educated person, are now rarely read, while books like Augustine's City of God (412-427 AD) and John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress (1678) are almost completely forgotten by ordinary people. Something has been lost. It is this something that needs to be recaptured as we search for our spiritual roots by following the Biblical injunction: “remember what the Lord your God has done” ( Deuteronomy 4:9 – 14; Acts 7). Most exciting of all recovering our Christian heritage offers wonderful opportunities for Biblically based travel and pilgrimage. |
